A bounding rectangle can help estimate sheet size, but it is not the final cutting pattern for a curved panel.
Make one template for each moving lid and another for the surrounding fixed deck. Mark the hinge side, opening direction, handle, latch, gas strut, gasket and any edge requiring functional clearance.
Open and close the hatch with both templates installed. Confirm that the planned EVA thickness will not interfere with hinges, recessed pulls or adjacent panels. A hatch that fits while closed can still bind when opened.
Identify every feature by function. For a circular cutout, mark the center and actual diameter. Add locating dimensions from at least two stable reference edges. For irregular hardware, trace the base and take overhead and side photographs.
Do not assume every fastener needs a cutout. Some components may be removed and reinstalled through the EVA, while others must remain exposed. Decide and label the intended treatment before cutting.

Do not assume port and starboard parts are identical. Factory variation, hardware and previous repairs can create differences. Make separate templates whenever practical. When one part is intentionally mirrored, write MIRROR COPY and identify the finished side represented by each copy.
Place seams where panels remain manageable and hatch operation is not affected. Favor logical straight transitions at hatches, consoles, furniture and raised levels. Avoid narrow fragile strips and shapes that must bend around several fixed objects during installation.
For faux-teak stripes, draw a long direction line across every panel. Add cross-panel alignment marks when adjoining stripe positions should continue visually. Panel fit and pattern continuity are separate requirements and should both be documented.
